Tank vs. Tankless: Which Water Heater Is Right for Your Utah Home?

Every week we get the same question: should I go tankless? The short answer is "it depends on the house." Here is what actually matters.

How each one works

A tank water heater stores 40 to 75 gallons of pre-heated water. A tankless heats water on demand through a heat exchanger. Both work fine when sized and installed correctly. Both fail early when they are not.

When a tank makes more sense

If your current gas line, venting, and electrical are set up for a tank, replacing with a modern high-efficiency tank is usually the fastest, cheapest option. For most 3-bath homes in Utah, a properly sized 50-gallon gas tank is plenty.

When tankless wins

Larger homes with multiple simultaneous demands (two showers plus a laundry) benefit from a properly sized tankless. So do homes where the mechanical room space is tight. Tankless units also last longer when the incoming water is treated for our hard Utah water.

What people get wrong

Under-sizing. Skipping the gas line upgrade. Ignoring venting. Installing tankless on untreated hard water without a softener. Any of those turns a great product into a warranty call.
