Planning a Plumbing Remodel: 5 Things Utah Homeowners Get Wrong

A good remodel starts with a good plan. Here are the five things we see homeowners get wrong most often, in order of how expensive the mistake gets.

1. Skipping the plumbing walkthrough before demo

Bring the plumber in before the tile guy tears anything out. Wall thickness, drain locations, and vent stacks all affect what is possible.

2. Assuming old fittings and lines are fine to reuse

If we're already in the wall, replacing 40-year-old galvanized lines and rusted shutoffs is cheap. Doing it a year later is not.

3. Buying fixtures before pipe sizes are confirmed

That gorgeous freestanding tub filler needs specific rough-in dimensions. So does the wall-hung toilet. Confirm before you buy.

4. Ignoring water pressure and supply capacity

Adding a rain head and body sprays to a 3/4" supply line is a recipe for pathetic water pressure. Plan the supply for the fixtures you actually want.

5. Not planning for future access

Shutoffs behind tile, no access panel for a tub trap, buried cleanouts. Small planning wins here save huge repair bills later.
